Failed supernovae as a natural explanation for the binary black hole mass distribution

چکیده

Context. As the number of detected gravitational wave sources increases, better we can understand mass distribution binary black holes (BBHs). This “stellar graveyard” shows several features, including an apparent gap that makes bimodal. In turn, observed chirp appears to be trimodal. Aims. We aim investigate extent which explain based on stellar evolution, specifically with hypothesis is caused by difference between successful and failed supernovae (SNe). Methods. posed a hypothetical remnant function, literature evolution simulations, relates initial mass, while “black hole island” producing bimodal distribution. Moreover, looked at type II SN rates in attempt detect effect SNe. Finally, using simplified estimation determined resulting from our function compared it observations. Results. find SNe lower approximately 25%, but inferred rate surveys not accurate enough confirm this. Furthermore, produces matches general shape distributions individual as well masses. Conclusions. Based research, conclude mechanism presence island are natural for explaining BBH However, obtain firmer conclusion, more detailed simulations needed.

Black Hole Emergence in Supernovae

If a black hole formed in a core-collapse supernova is accreting material from the base of the envelope, the accretion luminosity could be observable in the supernova light curve. We present results of a fully relativistic numerical investigation of the fallback of matter onto a black hole in a supernova and examine conditions which would be favorable for detection of the black hole. In general...

Binary black hole merger in the extreme mass ratio limit

We discuss the transition from quasi-circular inspiral to plunge of a system of two nonrotating black holes of masses m1 and m2 in the extreme mass ratio limit m1m2 ≪ (m1+m2). In the spirit of the Effective One Body (EOB) approach to the general relativistic dynamics of binary systems, the dynamics of the two black hole system is represented in terms of an effective particle of mass μ ≡ m1m2/(m...

Black Hole Binary Dynamics

We discuss a new N-body simulation method for studying black hole binary dynamics. This method avoids previous numerical problems due to large mass ratios and trapped orbits with short periods. A treatment of relativistic effects is included when the associated time-scale becomes small. Preliminary results with up to N = 2.4×10 particles are obtained showing systematic eccentricity growth until...
